Quality Mobile Installations has spent more than 20 years doing the work most people only see the finished version of. Communication systems, CAD/AVL, cameras, fare collection, and the dozens of other onboard technologies that keep transit and school bus fleets running — installed, adjusted, and supported across real vehicles, in real garages, under real service windows.
That experience is what the company was built on. It is also what the company is built around.
QMI is a family-owned business led by Meagan and Rusty Sours, operating from a working facility in Knoxville, Tennessee. The field teams are company employees, not rotating subcontractors, and most have been with the company long enough to understand how equipment ages on a bus, what a maintenance team will run into six months after install, and how to avoid the kinds of problems that generate callbacks.
This is not a company trying to be everything. It is a team that installs and supports fleet technology well, with enough experience to see where projects tend to break down, and enough control over the work to do something about it.
QMI’s core expertise lies in the installation of electronic systems on mobile transit, an area where we have amassed extensive experience over two decades. This experience encompasses a broad spectrum of systems integrated into diverse vehicle types, ranging from buses and trains to trams and other specialized transit vehicles. Our team possesses in-depth knowledge of various electronic systems commonly found in mobile transit, including communication systems, CAD/AVL, fare collection systems, radios, security and surveillance systems, and vehicle control systems.
When QMI started, the typical engagement was an installation scope: equipment to mount, timelines to hit, agencies to coordinate with. That work is still the core of what we do.
Over time, the same patterns kept showing up in the projects around us — specifications written without install input, hardware selected without long-term compatibility planning, multiple vendors with nobody clearly responsible when something did not fit or did not hold up. The technical execution was rarely the hard part. The planning and coordination around it usually was.
QMI has moved earlier into that process. Today the company works with agencies and partners across fleet audits, pre-RFP planning, installation design, in-house fabrication, deployment, and long-term service — not to add offerings for their own sake, but because each one changes how well the install actually holds up once vehicles are back in service.
The goal is to be the team fleet operators rely on to align planning, execution, and support under one accountable group, rather than coordinating those pieces themselves across separate vendors.
QMI is intentionally small relative to the scale of the projects it takes on. That is not a limitation. It is a design choice.
Leadership is hands-on. Ownership is involved in design, manufacturing, and field decisions, not just business operations. Our Knoxville facility handles custom fabrication in-house — stanchions, brackets, enclosures, wire harnesses, install kits — which means the components showing up on a vehicle were built by people who understand how they are going to be installed.
The field side is led by project leads, including Isaiah and Shane, who have each been with QMI for more than a decade running multi-site deployments across large transit agencies. The technicians they work with are full-time employees, not crews assembled for a single project, which is how installs stay consistent across vehicle types, locations, and schedules.
It is a structure that makes the work more accountable, not less.
